About the Design
As part of my role as postgraduate administrator for the School of Arts and Media, I organised the annual Postgraduate Conference. This is an event that provides a platform for Master’s and PhD students to share their research across the disciplines of Theatre, Film, English Literatures, Media and Communication, Art History, and Environmental Humanities.
I designed the poster and programme for this event, and collaborated with a student committee to come up with the conference theme, visual identity and identify common motifs among the research.
The conference theme was the whakataukī Mā Whero Mā Pango, Ka oti ai te mahi , which translates to “with red and black, the work will be complete”. The whakataukī takes its imagery from the red and black kōwhaiwhai patterns that often adorn wharenui and waka paddles. Drawing on this theme, I used an original kōwhaiwhai pattern created by committee member Alysse Kanal-Scott to inspire the imagery for the poster.
